Starting college can feel like a big step, especially for learners who may be unsure about where they fit in or what to expect. For Taylor, joining the Public Services course became much more than continuing her education, it became an opportunity to challenge herself, build confidence and discover a community where she felt she belonged.
While studying on the Public Services course, Taylor has embraced opportunities that have challenged her both personally and professionally. After settling into college life, she says the experience has been far better than she expected. Since joining college, she has developed a stronger sense of self and become more confident in the people she chooses to surround herself with. She says college has helped her feel accepted, make new friends and become more comfortable being herself.

One of Taylor’s proudest achievements has been taking part in boot camp, a thrilling four-day residential in the New Forest, something she describes as completely outside her comfort zone. Looking back, she says that just a year earlier, she would not have had the confidence to go away and take part.
From 6am fitness sessions to high ropes, working in teams to get over hurdles, and strategic problem-solving activities, this annual bootcamp was all about teamwork, resilience, and pushing boundaries.

The experience pushed her to challenge herself, while helping her develop leadership and teamwork skills and build friendships that remain important to her today. As part of her course, Taylor has also taken part in activities such as the Big Tommy Sleep Out, an experience that encouraged learners to reflect on the challenges faced by homeless veterans while raising awareness and supporting an important cause.

For Taylor, one of the biggest differences between school and college has been the increased independence and responsibility that comes with college life. She values being treated like an adult and having the opportunity to study a subject she genuinely enjoys. Most importantly, she says college has given her the confidence and space to be herself while exploring her interests and future goals.
Reflecting on her journey so far, Taylor sums up her experience simply:
“At college I can be myself and I get to surround myself with people like me.”
For prospective students joining in September, Taylor’s advice is simple: embrace every opportunity and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. She encourages new students to get involved, talk to new people and make the most of the experiences available, adding that the confidence and friendships you build along the way can make all the difference.
