A huge congratulations to 23 talented students from our Fast Forward and Gateway programmes, whose chilling short stories have been published in Fight or Flight, an anthology by Young Writers.
These students, all working towards their GCSE English as part of the College’s Access to Learning provision, were challenged to write a 100-word mini saga exploring a dramatic choice or dilemma - real or imagined, moral or physical. Students explored themes of horror, mystery and suspense, and left readers on killer cliff hangers.
From gas stations and shadowy figures to locked rooms and last-minute escapes, the stories are packed with adrenaline and imagination. One entry titled, Working Late at the Gas Station by student Willow, features a dark, eerie ending as workers heading home are captured by a mysterious shadow.
Willow explained her surprise when she was published, telling us “I was really surprised - didn’t expect it at all.”
Another gripping tale titled, Freedom by student Amelia, follows a woman trapped in a room, seconds from being injected with a mystery substance — only to collapse just before she breaks free.
Fast Forward and Gateway support students with additional learning needs, helping younger learners catch up or re-engage with education through tailored, supportive study programmes.
English tutor Matthew Ruddle introduced the competition to his students back in 2022, after spotting it online. Since then, the College’s student entries - and winners - have continued to grow.
English Tutor, Matthew Ruddle:
“It’s amazing to see how students respond when their writing gets into a physical book...It gives them such a confidence boost and shows how capable they are of producing powerful, creative work.
As exam season continues, this national recognition couldn’t come at a better time. This achievement is a timely reminder of the talent, creativity, and determination that our students bring to everything they do.
