At Abingdon & Witney College, we pride ourselves on helping students grow in confidence, discover their strengths, and take meaningful steps into the world of work. One shining example of this journey is Sorcha Calvert, a determined young woman, whose story is inspiring both staff and students alike.
Just a year ago, Sorcha was grappling with the daily challenges of dyslexia and dyspraxia. But today, she’s confidently serving guests at the Leonardo Royal Hotel in Oxford, effortlessly reeling off coffee orders - from lattes to espressos - with a smile and poise that reflect her incredible personal growth.
Sorcha joined our Supported Internship programme as part of the Pathways course, with a clear goal in mind: to work in the hospitality industry. With her warm personality and eagerness to learn, she was a natural fit for the sector. Through a partnership between the College and Oxfordshire County Council, Sorcha was provided with a tailored Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and a Supported Internship placement at the Leonardo Royal Hotel.
"Finding a job is daunting for anyone, even more so when you’ve got additional needs and dyslexia like me. But I was determined and made my approach to the Leonardo Royal Hotel in Oxford at a job fair. Then the council’s brilliant internship team helped push me through the door"
Sorcha impressed the hotel management with her dedication and people skills. Just three months into her internship, her hard work paid off - she was offered a permanent position in the hotel café, with opportunities to progress into the restaurant.
“The Supported Internship team are all incredibly proud of Sorcha,” said Rachel Thorne, Sorcha’s Course Leader. “She has approached her course with hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude which have really paid off. She has grown in confidence and skills during her time with us, and we couldn't be happier to see her move on into her new role."
Madalina Duminica, Food and Beverage Director at the Leonardo Royal Hotel, has also seen Sorcha flourish:
“She joined us shy and unsure, but quickly grew in confidence. Her positive attitude and dedication make her a true asset to our team.”
Despite a daily 90-minute commute each way, Sorcha continues to show unwavering commitment to her role. The College is working closely with Oxfordshire County Council to help secure funding through the Access to Work scheme, which will reduce travel barriers and open up more opportunities for Sorcha to grow within the hospitality sector, including evening shifts in the hotel restaurant.
Councillor Sean Gaul, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Oxfordshire County Council, summed it up best:
“Sorcha is a shining example of the positive difference our supported internship programme can make. She’s ambitious and determined, and just needed the right support to thrive.”
At Abingdon & Witney College, we believe every student deserves the chance to succeed on their own terms. Sorcha’s journey reminds us of the power of perseverance, community, and opportunity - and we’re proud to have played a part in her story.
