From childhood passion to profession: Edmund's Animal Zoology and Conservation journey

For Edmund Zealley, a passion for animals started early. Childhood adventures outdoors and a determination to persuade his family to let him keep a goldfish cemented a lifelong fascination with wildlife. Today, that lifelong fascination is being transformed into career ambitions through the Animal Zoology and Conservation HNC.

After completing a Level 3 Animal Management qualification at our Common Leys Farm campus, Ed chose the Higher National Certificate (HNC) as an alternative route to university, attracted by its specialist content, smaller class sizes and opportunities for progression.

"There were a few things that really drew me to the course," he explains. "I could gain more UCAS points and keep my options open for university, but I was also excited by the range of modules and the opportunity to learn in a smaller, more supportive group."

The Animal Zoology and Conservation HNC, taught at Common Leys Farm, is designed for students who want to build practical skills alongside academic knowledge. Covering topics such as Animal Behaviour, Endangered Species Conservation, and Habitat Restoration and Repair, the course equips students with the technical expertise and professional behaviours needed for careers in conservation, zoology and ecology.

For Ed, the Endangered Species Conservation module was particularly inspiring.

"It definitely exceeded my expectations," he says. "It broadened my understanding of conservation and showed me how small changes, even in your own garden, can make a real difference to local wildlife."

Practical learning is another highlight of the programme. Students develop industry-relevant experience through activities including animal training, laboratory investigations and research projects, helping bridge the gap between classroom theory and professional practice.

"The practical sessions have made me much more confident," Edmund says. "They show how what you learn in theory translates into real conservation work and making a genuine difference."

Beyond technical knowledge, the course has also helped Edmund develop valuable transferable skills. Through independent research and collaborative learning, he has strengthened his communication, critical thinking and self-management, while his role as a Student Representative has further built his confidence.

"You don't have to have a special role to make a difference," he says. "Everyone's opinion matters."

Having been homeschooled before joining college, Ed credits the supportive learning environment with helping him grow both personally and academically.

"My teachers have been supportive, engaging and inclusive throughout the course. They've encouraged discussion, challenged us to think critically and inspired me to pursue a career in conservation."

Looking ahead, Ed hopes to specialise in marine conservation and ocean exploration. As he considers his next steps, progressing onto the Animal Zoology and Conservation HND is firmly on his radar, allowing him to deepen his knowledge before moving on to university or employment within the sector.
