College Development Day celebrates confidence, curiosity and digital growth

6th May 2026

Yesterday, staff from across all four of our campuses came together for College Development Day, a termly whole-college event dedicated to ongoing professional learning, collaboration, and digital innovation.

This term’s Digital theme had a key focus on Embrace, Not Replace, reflecting a shared commitment to using digital tools to enhance practice and efficiency, rather than replace human intelligence or interaction. It reinforced the message that there will always be value in human connection, while also recognising the opportunities digital tools offer to work smarter, not harder.

College Principal, Jacqui Canton, opened the day with a welcome and introduction, setting a positive tone and encouraging staff to approach the sessions with openness, curiosity and confidence. It was acknowledged that not everyone feels equally confident in the digital landscape, and staff were reassured that there was no judgement, only encouragement, support, and space to explore. It was also emphasised that “digital” extends far beyond artificial intelligence, encompassing a wide range of tools that many staff already use in their daily practice.

Principal, Jacqui Canton, explained:

“Our focus is on supporting students, apprentices, and employers alike - through investment in training, AI development, and real-world learning opportunities. At the heart of our digital strategy is a simple commitment: to invest in our people so they can build confidence, stay curious, and develop the digital skills that work for them.”

A key theme throughout the day was that apprehension does not mean unwillingness or inability, being at the start of a learning journey does not prevent mastery, and confidence in one tool does not mean there is nothing left to learn. Staff were reminded that being a beginner simply means beginning, and that every stage of learning has value.

Across the day, colleagues took part in a wide range of interactive, hands-on workshops designed to build confidence and enhance practice. Sessions supported staff at all levels, from those exploring digital basics through tools such as Canva and Excel, to more experienced users developing advanced skills in areas including Power BI, Microsoft Copilot, and AI-supported lesson planning.

A strong focus was placed on digital engagement and innovation in teaching and learning. Staff explored Virtual Reality, Minecraft for Education, gamification tools, interactive quizzes, screen casting, Smartboard use, and digital resource creation. Many sessions also strengthened inclusive practice, with a focus on assistive technologies and accessibility.

Alongside practical development, staff engaged in reflective discussions around the wider role of technology in education, including digital wellbeing, sustainability, and the responsible use of emerging tools. These conversations encouraged thoughtful consideration of how digital innovation can support, not replace, the human element of teaching.

Throughout the day, the atmosphere was one of collaboration, curiosity and shared growth, with colleagues supporting one another to experiment with new ideas and build confidence in unfamiliar tools.

The College extends its sincere thanks to all staff who volunteered to design and deliver sessions, as well as to our fantastic Estates and Catering teams. Their expertise, enthusiasm and generosity played a key role in the success of the event.

College Development Day once again highlighted the importance of continuous learning and the value of taking time to explore, reflect and grow. It served as a reminder that learning is ongoing, confidence develops through experience, and every step of the journey matters.
