Adult Learning Pays: How Luke turned purpose into practice

2nd Mar 2026

This week we mark Colleges Week and kick off by celebrating the theme ‘Adult Learning Pays’. This day shines a spotlight on learners who have taken bold steps to reshape their futures. Our Higher Education and Professional courses offer flexible, community-based education that empowers adults to retrain, upskill and thrive, and Luke Theophilus is a powerful example of just how transformational this can be.

Luke returned to education at Abingdon & Witney College to continue a path he had first stepped onto years earlier. “I struggled with my mental health at a young age,” he explains. “So l had experiences of, and an interest in counselling early on.” After completing Levels 1 and 2 in the mid-2000s, life moved in a different direction. But the goal never left him. “A few years ago I was struggling to find a purpose career-wise, so it felt like a good time to continue my counselling journey and chase a goal I had for so long.

Choosing to study Levels 3 and 4 at our Witney and Abingdon campuses allowed Luke to balance learning with work and family life. “They were understanding of the challenges one might face coming back to study at my age,” he says. “Most of the course requirements could be arranged around our own schedules.” With detailed feedback and consistent encouragement, his tutors played a pivotal role. “I doubted myself academically at times, but my tutors always made it clear that they believed in me, even when I didn’t.

Learning in a small, supportive group built both resilience and confidence. “Skill sessions were long and intense, but we were all in the same boat. That made it easier to share, accept honest feedback and grow together.” The humanistic, integrated approach our training takes shaped the way Luke now works with clients: “My priority is always to build a comfortable and safe environment based on authenticity and trust.

Luke’s journey was not without personal challenge. During Level 3, Luke’s father passed away unexpectedly. “Battling through this difficult period made me more determined to achieve my goal. It reminded me that it’s okay to be vulnerable.” Balancing two placements, full-time work and family life tested his resilience, but strengthened his belief in himself.

Today, Luke works with young people at Aspire in Witney and is preparing to launch his own private practice. “All the training clicked very early on. There were big breakthroughs for clientsand everything began to progress naturally. This is just the beginning.”

Luke’s story shows that adult learning pays in confidence, career direction, and personal growth.
