Abingdon & Witney College students achieve record high results

21st Aug 2020

Students studying for their English and maths GCSEs at Abingdon & Witney College have passed in record numbers, it has been revealed.

Across the College for the 2019-20 academic year, 98% of students passed, with a further 70% achieving high grades (A* - C).

The College is renowned for the quality of its English and maths teaching. The latest National Achievement Rates Tables (NARTs) from the Government ranked the College third in England for high grade GCSE results in 2018-19.

“Here at Abingdon and Witney College, every year we support hundreds of young people and adults to gain GCSEs in English and maths as well as a huge range of vocational and technical qualifications,” said Jenny Craig, Vice Principal at the College.

“These results reflect the resilience, hard work and dedication of our students and their teachers over the past year and we congratulate all of them.”

Many Level 2 vocational and technical results have also been released, with early indications showing strong performances across all areas.

Pearson, the BTEC awarding body, took the decision late on 19 August to review all BTEC grades to ensure that no student is disadvantaged.

“We welcome this outcome as it will ensure that all students achieve the results they deserve but we recognise that this will create additional uncertainty for our progressing students,” Mrs Craig continued.

“We have therefore decided that, although we are not yet able to issue individual results, where draft BTEC and final GCSE grades indicate that progressing students have met their offer conditions, we will confirm their offer and progress their enrolment. We very much hope that this will enable students to focus on their future and next steps with us.”

Last week’s A level and Level 3 vocational qualification results also produced a number of success stories.

This includes students on the College’s Blended Learning courses, which are run in conjunction with local 6th Form Colleges, achieving a 100% pass rate, with 1 Starred Distinction, 5 Distinctions, 7 Merits and 3 Passes.
