The Level 4 Network Engineer Apprenticeship is designed to provide apprentices with the advanced skills and knowledge required to design, implement, and maintain complex networking infrastructures.
This apprenticeship focuses on developing expertise in network architecture, security, and troubleshooting, preparing apprentices for roles in IT departments, telecommunications companies, or network service providers. The demand for people who can manage, build, maintain virtual and physical networks is increasing. This is because of technological developments such as, 5G and Cloud. The broad purpose of the occupation is to install computer networks, maintain them, and offer technical support to users where necessary. It equips apprentices with the skills needed to succeed in the rapidly evolving field of IT networking.

Duration: • 24 months practical training period, plus 3 months for End Point Assessment

Delivery model:• Work-based training with your employer• Day release during term time (approx. 36 days per year)• Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (7 days at college for each, if required)• Off the job training will count for at least 6 hours a week of an apprentice’s time at work

Install, Configure, and Test Network Components: Deploy and test network devices securely to specified standards, whether physical or virtual.
Monitor and Analyze Network Performance: Acquire and analyze data to optimize network activity and performance.
Optimize and Maintain Network Systems: Ensure ongoing performance alignment with defined specifications for physical and virtual networks.
Troubleshoot and Resolve Technical Issues: Investigate and address network problems promptly, escalating when necessary.
Execute Network Upgrades: Implement upgrades to enhance network functionality and efficiency.
Interpret Technical Specifications: Apply written requirements and technical specifications to deliver network services.
Maintain Accurate Records: Document network tasks in compliance with organizational policies.
Efficient Work Management: Use operational data to schedule work efficiently and cost-effectively.
Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Evaluate and manage risks associated with network changes according to organizational protocols.
Effective Stakeholder Communication: Communicate network requirements clearly and professionally to stakeholders.
Continuous Self-Learning: Stay updated with technological advancements for professional development.
Consideration of Digital Context: Apply broader digital knowledge to network engineering activities.

This apprenticeship is also designed to prepare successful apprentices to meet the requirements for registration as a Network Engineer on the Register of IT Technicians (RITTECH)
Entry criteria
Level 3 qualification in IT, Computer Science, or related field
Strong interest in networking and information security and will need to demonstrate the ability to achieve all elements of the apprenticeship during their programme, including working in a suitable job role.
Basic understanding of networking concepts (e.g., IP addressing, subnetting)
Applicants are likely to have 5 GCSEs A*- C / 9 - 4, including Maths and English, or equivalent.

Fee information
Free to apprentices. This apprenticeship has a £17,000 funding band. Depending on age some small companies will need to contribute £850 toward the funding; large companies could pay through the apprenticeship levy if they have funds available.

As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.

Network Engineer Level 4 Apprenticeship
Learning & method assessment
The apprenticeship will include a combination of classroom-based instruction, hands-on labs, simulated network environments, and real-world projects.
Assessment methods may include exams, practical assessments, network design projects, and troubleshooting scenarios.
At the end of the taught content the Apprentice will undertake an external End Point Assessment which will include two assessments:
Assessment method 1: Simulation Assessment and Questioning
Assessment method 2: Professional discussion underpinned by portfolio

You will develop skills in a range of competencies to be able to prove competence as a employed Network Engineer. Technical Skills:Networking Infrastructure: Installation, configuration, and maintenance of LANs, WANs, routers, switches, and firewalls.Network Protocols: Proficiency in TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, and other networking protocols.Hardware Knowledge: Working with routers, switches, and wireless access points.Software Skills: Configuring and troubleshooting network-related software and applications.Network Security: Implementing security measures to protect against cyber threats and unauthorized access.

Problem-Solving and Troubleshooting:Quick identification and resolution of network issues to minimize downtime.Analyzing complex problems to develop innovative solutions.
