Engineering has a hand in designing nearly everything you come into contact with within your daily lives such as homes, cars, computers, mobile phones and game consoles. This course will allow you to develop an understanding of engineering disciplines and prepare you for working in this exciting industry. You will spend time in both the classroom, learning basic principles and theory, and in the engineering workshop, where you will learn a range of practical engineering processes and skills. You will also spend a minimum of 45 days on an industrial placement where you will work closely with a leading employer either every week or on a block placement to help you develop the right knowledge, technical skills and behaviours for working in this exciting sector.

"In year 1 you will learn:Key principles, tools and methodologies in engineering and manufacturing design practice and processes How materials, conditions and context influence engineering and manufacturing design processes and products How user requirements are translated into engineering and manufacturing designs, i.e. inclusive design How research and testing, and different research and testing methodologies, support effective design practices and outcomes. This Engineering & Manufacturing – Design & Development T Level also includes the following core principles:Science and mathematics – understand the scientific principles that underpin relevant technologies and use the main formulae associated with them. Engineering analysis – this involves the application of engineering concepts and tools to the solution of engineering and manufacturing problems. Design – learn about the development of economically viable products, processes or systems to meet a defined need. Economic, legal, social, ethical and environmental contexts – learn how engineering and manufacturing activities impact on the environment, commerce, society and on individuals. You will learn about being aware of these activities and understand the various legal and ethical constraints relevant to engineering and manufacturing. Engineering practice – learn about the practical application of engineering and manufacturing knowledge and skills. In Year 2 you will have the choice of which occupational specialism you study and these will be specialist units to develop specific knowledge and skills in either mechanical engineering or electrical and electronic engineering."

Course units
"T Levels are made up of three elements:Core ComponentThis will be split into two parts:Technical knowledge and skills relevant to the T Levels industry. You’ll need to demonstrate that you:Understand how your industry works; Understand how occupational specialisms fit within the industry; and Know the working practices in the industry. An employer-set project which will require you to apply your knowledge and skills to a set challenge.Specialist SkillsYou’ll learn specialist skills for your industry in a classroom-based environments, such as workshops. You will need to show evidence of your achievement and demonstrate your ability to work in your chosen industry.Industry PlacementsIndustry placements are an essential part of the T Level qualification, and you’ll complete between 45-60 days in a placement. This means you’ll develop the workplace skills that employers are looking for, gain a clearer idea about the job and even the possibility of opportunities to secure future employment!"

5 GCSEs at grade 4 including English, maths at grade 5 OR a pass at Level 2 and English grade 4, maths grade 5 or above.

Learning & method assessment
You will be taught on campus with a full time programme of lessons in our engineering workshops. We provide the specialist knowledge and industry expertise to prepare you for employment with some of the best engineering companies and employers. You will also work with one of our partner employers, each one leaders in their field, who will help you apply the theory and skills learnt in college to real industry applications.
