This course helps to enhance personal or work-place skills, especially for those in customer focussed services including the caring profession and mental health workers. The Level 2 Certificate in Counselling skills is accredited by the NCFE. Students are introduced to the three main theoretical approaches to counselling: Person-centred, Psychodynamic and CBT, as well as the basics of Transactional Analysis. Students learn to identify and practice core counselling skills. Personal development and peer group work are essential course components. Learners enhance their understanding of ethical and diversity issues and identify appropriate codes of practice to adapt to their unique workplace setting. Level 2 is also the foundation level entry course into the counselling profession.

The course provides the opportunity to strengthen your use of counselling skills in the workplace and prepares you for progression to the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies.

The tutor team includes working counsellor practitioners who have a passion to maintain the standards of the profession and encourage the best qualities within their students. Students will develop supportive peer relationships, as group work is a key element of the training.

This qualification does not lead to counselling employment. It is designed as pre-practitioner training for professional counselling qualifications, but it could also provide professional development or lead to employment for those working in a related field.

This course is validated by the NCFE (Northern Council for Further Education). NCFE is a well-known and reputable awarding body for level 2 qualifications. For more information, the NCFE website can be accessed on www.ncfe.org.uk

During the course you will study a range of units:

• Using Counselling Skills

• Introduction to Counselling Skills Theories

• Diversity and Ethics in the Use of Counselling Skills

• Counselling Skills and Personal Development

You should allow approximately three hours per week for the time spent completing homework tasks and independent study in addition to the scheduled class time. This is likely to fluctuate at key points during the course depending on assignment dates.

The course has one formal assessment element which candidates must pass in order to pass the course:

• Portfolio of evidence, which will involve a variety of documents including assignments, reviews of your learning and peer and tutor feedback

What next?

Students who successfully complete this course are able to apply for the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling studies (CPCAB accredited) course as the next step towards a full counselling qualification.

Entry criteria
• You must have completed the ""Introduction to College IT systems"" course to ensure that you have sufficient digital skills to build your online portfolio.• You must have a reasonable standard of written and spoken English in order to access the course materials and complete assessments. A reading and writing activity may be included in the interview process. • Minimum candidate age 19 years old at 31 August preceding the start of the course. • Ability to translate intra-personal experience into language• Able to benefit from self-development and evidence personal insight
