You will be offered a broad grounding in the use of acrylics. You will cover glazing, layering, impasto painting, bold and expressive brush work. You will examine how to observe a simple still life, how to mould form through light and shade, how to use colour effectively and how to express space and distance in a landscape.
The course is designed for those with little or no formal training or experience in the medium.

What the course will cover:

• Topiary bushes, repeated mark painting

• Tree in Landscape

• Cloudy sky: Use negative spaces to help construct the rhythm of cloud shapes

• Repeated mark painting of still life of citrus fruit.

• Repeated mark painting of trees.

• Reflective surfaces

• Expressing Transparency: Glass objects

• Colour wheel part one

• Analogous colour scheme

• Simple still life with cool colours

• Palette knife painting: Expressive landscape

Please note: there will be no session on 17/02/24

Materials required. Please do not buy any materials until your course is confirmed as running:A middle range brand of paints such as Winsor and Newton’s Galleria Range or Daler Rowney’s System 3 is recommended; Colours: Essential: Titanium White (please do not buy any other white), Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultra Marine Blue, Viridian Green (or Phthalo Green, but not both!) Also very useful: Permanent Rose, Burnt Sienna, Permanent Violet, Yellow Ochre. Flow improver or blending medium or gel retarder. In order to avoid disappointment, it is advisable to enrol at least 2 ½ weeks prior to the course starting. We will confirm course information two weeks prior to the start date. Brushes: Long flat acrylic brushes are easiest. You need at least a small one and a big one, so a number 6 and a number 12, or similar Pad of canvas sheets or pad of acrylic paper A4 or A3 size Palette- “Stay wet” palettes are best. You can buy these readymade or you can use a plate. Kitchen roll and grease proof paper

Courses can fill fast, so please enrol early to avoid disappointment. Decisions on whether a course is to run are made two weeks prior to the start date - an email will be sent to you should there be changes to your course or if it is cancelled. Please check your inbox leading up to your course, including the junk folders. For anyone without an email account, our Admissions team will phone you instead.

For the first week of the course you will need to bring a valid form of identification; this includes passport, driving licence, debit/credit card, Birth Certificate or National Insurance card.

Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2024 prior to starting the course.

Fee information
You are expected to provide your own materials, which may cost approximately £20. Please do not buy any materials until your course is confirmed as running.

Courses offered by the college are fully or partly funded by the Government and the published fee takes account of this funding.

Before starting a course, the College is required to check you meet conditions relating to that funding, e.g. age, residency status within the UK/EEA, prior qualification level and employment status. In some circumstances (such as with online enrolments), these checks can only be completed after you have enrolled and paid.

If you are unable to pay in full for this course at the time of enrolment, and the course tuition fee is £300 or more, an instalment plan is available. If this is your preference, please do not enrol online but rather call the Admissions Team on 01235 216400 to enrol.

Once enrolled, Admissions will take the first instalment payment from you and pass on your details to the Finance team who will email you to set-up your payment plan. Please return a fully completed instalment plan to Finance as failure to do so could result in being withdrawn from your course.

As this is a non-accredited course, there is no formal qualification. However, you will be asked to complete activities that demonstrate how you are progressing on your course.
Learning & method assessment
As this is a non-accredited course, informal methods of assessment will be used. To track your progress and achievement you will be required to complete a short document.
