and this December, we’re adding a sprinkle of holiday magic by introducing Abingdon & Witney College’s Advent Calendar 2024 🎅.
7th Oct 2024
7th – 11th October marks National Young Farmers’ Week 2024, a celebration of young farmers and the vital role they play in ensuring the sustainability and innovation of British farming.
The celebration is organised by the Young Farmers' Club (YFC), a youth organisation that provides 23,000 farmers aged 10-28 with unique opportunities to develop skills, engage with their local communities, travel abroad, and enjoy a rich social life.
The ethos of the organisation closely aligns with the College’s ambitions, as we strive to offer an inclusive educational environment that allows all young people to pursue a career in the rural sector, regardless of their background or previous access to rural spaces.
“At Common Leys Farm Campus, we are passionate that all young people engage in Agriculture activities. It's important young people learn firsthand where their food is produced and how farmers work to plant and grow crops and how they manage looking after livestock. The young people of today are the driving force behind the transformation of the agriculture sector, they are redefining what it means to be a farmer. By embracing new technologies and sustainable practices, they are not only ensuring food security but also protecting our planet for future generations.” – Coral Ward | Head of Faculty | Land-based Industries
This year’s National Young Farmers’ Week themes are: YFC for Everyone, YFC for Food and Farming, YFC for Community, YFC for Skills Development, and YFC for Friendships.
To mark the occasion, students at our Common Leys Farm campus will be participating in a variety of activities, sharing their personal experiences and stories of being young farmers, and discussing what it means to them. Students will also be celebrating British produce at the College’s Farm Shop and celebrating the many friendships they have formed during their course.
