Public Services students take on the Great Tommy Sleep Out

1st Apr 2026

Seventy of our dedicated Public Services students recently took part in the Great Tommy Sleep Out, demonstrating resilience, teamwork, and a shared commitment to supporting veterans facing homelessness.

The challenge, which takes place throughout March, encourages participants to spend at least one night sleeping outdoors to raise awareness and funds for those who have served their country but now face difficult circumstances such as homelessness. By stepping outside their comfort zones, our students helped shine a light on the realities many veterans endure every day.

Braving a cold evening on campus, students slept under the shelter of B Block, with some choosing only a roll mat or even cardboard alongside their sleeping bags. Despite the chilly conditions, spirits remained high, thanks to warm meals provided by the College’s catering team, students were well-prepared for the night ahead.

The event was made possible with the support of staff including Will Williams, Laura Francis, Garry McCuaig, Richard Pierson, Andy Fleet and Liam Hare, whose encouragement and supervision ensured a safe and meaningful experience for all involved.

So far, the group have raised over £1,900 for the Royal British Legion, far exceeding their initial £1000 target. The student's’ willingness to step outside their comfort zones and support such an important cause is a testament to their compassion, resilience, and community spirit.

If you’re passionate about making a difference and want to develop the skills to support and protect others, explore our Public Services courses and take the first step towards a rewarding future.

If you’d like to support our students and help make an even bigger difference, donations are still open. Every contribution, no matter the size, will go towards supporting veterans facing homelessness. Please visit their JustGiving page to get involved: https://www.justgiving.com/fun...
