Proudly celebrating our students’ GCSE achievements

21st Aug 2025

At Abingdon & Witney College, GCSE Results Day is about far more than grades on a piece of paper - it’s about confidence, resilience, and taking the next bold step forward. Today, our learners marked an incredible milestone in their journeys, celebrating achievements that will unlock new opportunities in apprenticeships, higher-level study, and future careers.

Behind every result is a story of determination, growth, and the belief that challenges can be overcome. It’s a true reflection of what it means to Be You. Be Extraordinary.

A day of achievement

For some, success meant achieving the grades they needed to move forward; for others, it was surpassing their own expectations. But for all, today’s results represent confidence gained, goals achieved, and exciting new doors opening.

Congratulations to every one of our learners - these results are just the beginning of your next great chapter.

Finding my voice in a new language

One of the day’s most inspiring stories came from Adam, a Computing Level 2 student, who secured a remarkable grade 8 in English - despite English not being his first language.

“It’s always nerve-wracking opening results, but I honestly didn’t expect an 8,” Adam said. “The support from teachers and study coaches has been amazing - it’s like having a private tutor who’s always there to help. My English teacher, Merle, really stood out. She made lessons engaging and made me want to stay focused.”

Adam will now join the Oxford United Advanced Football Programme, before returning to Computing at T Level or progressing into an apprenticeship.

Confidence through achievement

For Nowr, finally achieving a grade 5 in English after several resits was a moment of joy and disbelief.

“All I wanted was a 4, so to get a 5 was amazing,” Nowr shared. “The support from my teachers was incredible – they explained things in a way that really stuck with me.”

Her story is proof that perseverance pays off, and that confidence often grows from the very challenges that once felt impossible.

Ollie, a dedicated Level 1 Electrical student, also celebrated success, achieving a grade 4 in Maths through consistent hard work and focus. His teacher Rachel said:
“His attendance, attitude, and determination have been top-notch, and teaching him this year has been a real pleasure. Well done, Ollie!”

Building pathways to the future

This was an especially proud moment for students on the Gateway programme, many of whom have previously faced challenges in their education.

Gateway 14-16 students celebrated fantastic outcomes, including Evie, who gained a grade 5 in Maths and 8 in English, and is now progressing onto Level 2 Art. Her mum praised the “fantastic support of the Gateway team.”

Staff pride in student success

Reflecting on the day, Rachel Hardisty-Hughes, Maths Lecturer, said:

“I am beyond proud of every single one of my students who achieved in their GCSE Maths today. These achievements are the result of the students’ hard work, dedication, and determination to succeed. They were able to show resilience through challenges and commitment to improving every step of the way. All their belief has truly paid off. Today is proof that hard work brings rewards. All my students should be so proud of what they have accomplished – I certainly am! Congratulations everyone!”

Amanda, English and Maths Lecturer, shared her pride in the Access to Learning students:
“The Abingdon Access to Learning students have blown us away with their achievements this year – I am so very proud of each and every one of them. They are a unique group and each of them has faced many different challenges on their journey. Many had never even sat a GCSE before, and to have done so and gained a grade is a fantastic achievement. Ten students excelled and gained a grade 4 or 5. Many of the Access to Learning students have now been able to enrol on a vocational course at college, and I am excited to see them continue to grow and develop. Well done to them all.”

Looking ahead

This year’s GCSE results are more than grades – they’re stepping stones to new opportunities, fresh ambitions, and bigger dreams. Our students have shown that with resilience and belief, challenges can be turned into triumphs.

As they move into the next exciting stage of their journeys, one thing is clear: at Abingdon & Witney College, every learner has the chance to Be You. Be Extraordinary - and today’s results prove just that.
