Students from the Performing Arts course at our Abingdon campus took to the stage to deliver a vibrant production of 9 to 5: The Musical across two evening performances on 28th and 29th May, at the Amey Theatre at Abingdon School.
With music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and a book by Patricia Resnick, based on the iconic 1980 hit movie, the production brought together students from across the department to showcase their talent, creativity and dedication in a show that entertained audiences while highlighting the strength of performing arts at the College.
Set in the late 1970s, the story follows co-workers Violet, Judy and Doralee as they take on their sexist, egotistical boss in a tale of friendship, resilience and revenge. From the opening scenes, students captivated audiences with confident performances, sharp comedic timing and dynamic musical numbers that brought the fast-paced world of office life to the stage.

Known for its memorable soundtrack and bold themes, 9 to 5: The Musical gave students the opportunity to explore a wide range of characters while developing skills in acting, singing and ensemble performance. Lively choreography, strong vocals and seamless transitions created a polished production full of personality and energy.

The show formed part of students’ Final Major Project, a significant milestone in the academic year that allows learners to showcase the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout their time at college. Students were involved in all aspects of the production, from performance and character development to working collaboratively as part of a wider production team. Live productions like this play an important role in developing transferable skills including teamwork, communication and confidence, helping prepare students for progression into higher education and careers within the creative industries.
Calum James, Director of the Show and Performing Arts Course Leader, reflected:
“Staging 9 to 5 has been both a bold and exciting challenge and has pushed our students to explore character and storytelling in new and dynamic ways. Throughout the process, they have shown dedication, resilience, and a strong sense of collaboration, supporting one another to create something vibrant and engaging. It has been incredibly rewarding to watch their confidence grow and their ideas take shape, both on and off the stage. I am so proud of the students and the staff and want to say a big thank you to everyone for being here tonight to support them and celebrate their hard work.”
Congratulations to everyone involved in the production, you should be incredibly proud of what you achieved. The performances were a memorable celebration of talent, creativity and collaboration, and a fantastic way to round off the year.
