Learners from Common Leys Farm have just returned from an unforgettable two-week experience in South Africa, combining wildlife encounters and conservation work at the renowned Sibuya Game Reserve.
Organised in partnership with Gap Africa Projects, the trip gave students the opportunity to take their learning beyond the classroom in one of the world’s most diverse wildlife environments.
The learners got involved in a range of meaningful conservation projects, gaining valuable hands-on experience, whilst learning more about the challenges of protecting endangered species. They also took part in community projects, making a positive impact on the local environment.
Working alongside wildlife researchers, they collected elephant dung samples to measure cortisol levels and assess the effects of contraception on animal welfare.
As part of wildlife monitoring activities, students helped set up mist nets for bird ringing, enabling the tracking of migratory bird species.
The learners also supported the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) by improving kennel facilities, undertaking tasks such as painting, removing old concrete, digging foundations, and creating additional space for the animals.
During a community action day, they worked together to clear rubbish from an area near the Kariega River, helping to protect the local environment.
Their conservation work continued through dung and insect sampling, as well as SASS kick sampling, a recognised method of assessing water quality and the health of freshwater ecosystems.
The students also played an active role in maintaining the reserve, carrying out practical conservation tasks including removing invasive plants and maintaining fences. These activities gave them an insight into the essential work involved in protecting habitats and supporting the reserve’s fragile ecosystem.
The experience provided students with much more than an opportunity to see South Africa’s incredible wildlife. They developed practical field skills, increased their confidence and gained a deeper understanding of the complexities of conservation and the importance of protecting natural environments.
The South Africa trip is an example of the learning opportunities available to students at Abingdon & Witney College, which allow them to apply their knowledge in real-world environments while developing practical skills and broadening their understanding of their chosen industry.
