Earlier this week, Engineering apprentices based at Abingdon campus demonstrated their application of technical expertise and problem-solving skills as they presented their end of year engineering projects as part of the EAL Advanced Manufactured Engineering Diploma.
The presentations highlighted how the Level 3 Engineering Apprentices have applied their learning directly within workplace environments, with each apprentice identifying and tackling a genuine engineering challenge and developing practical solutions through design, manufacture, installation and process improvement.
Each project reflected key industry priorities, including safety, efficiency, reliability and cost reduction, while also demonstrating the apprentices’ abilities in planning, communication and technical problem-solving.
A wide range of engineering disciplines was represented. Mechanical design projects included the creation of a compact interlock mounting bracket to improve safety on beamline access systems for a particle accelerator, alongside a precision die holder manufactured using reclaimed materials to enhance workshop operations and sustainability.
Automation and process improvement emerged as strong themes throughout the presentations. One apprentice developed an automated hopper valve system that has already helped reduce costly production failures, while another designed a bench-top filling machine capable of delivering highly accurate and consistent dosing for packaging applications.
Electrical and systems engineering projects further demonstrated the breadth of skills developed throughout the year. These included the installation and testing of high-power RF supply infrastructure to support a major facility upgrade, as well as the design of an energy-saving isolation system for injection moulding machinery, with the potential to generate significant operational savings.

Imran Khan, Engineering Lecturer, shared:
“These projects demonstrate the high level of technical ability, commitment and professionalism our apprentices have developed throughout their programme. What makes them particularly impressive is that each project addresses a genuine industry challenge and delivers real value within the workplace. It’s fantastic to see our apprentices applying their knowledge so effectively and developing into skilled engineers ready for the next stage of their careers.”
Across all of the projects, apprentices demonstrated their ability to apply engineering principles in practical settings, delivering meaningful improvements for their organisations while showcasing the skills, innovation and professionalism needed to succeed as the next generation of engineers.
