Celebrating World Teachers’ Day: Inspiring language learning with Sandra Carrasco Fuentes

5th Oct 2026

This World Teachers’ Day, we’re celebrating the remarkable educators who inspire, support and empower our learners every day.

For Spanish Lecturer, Sandra Carrasco Fuentes, that means creating engaging and enjoyable learning experiences that bring language and culture to life. Originally from Spain, Sandra completed her teaching qualifications at the University of Murcia and has been teaching Spanish at the College for over ten years, at all levels. She brings both authentic language expertise and a wealth of cultural knowledge to the classroom.

For Sandra, learning a language is about much more than vocabulary and grammar.

“Learning a language opens doors to new cultures, opportunities and experiences. I believe learning should be enjoyable and interactive, and it's incredibly rewarding to see students grow in confidence, develop their communication skills and discover a passion for Spanish.”

Her lessons combine technology, games, practical activities and discussion, encouraging learners to actively participate and develop communication skills they can use in real-life situations. She also introduces students to the customs, traditions and everyday life of Spanish-speaking countries, helping them develop a wider appreciation of different cultures and perspectives.

A successful first year for Spanish GCSE

Sandra’s enthusiasm and innovative approach have helped make the College’s Spanish GCSE programme a success; from contributing to the development of the curriculum, to planning and delivering engaging lessons.

"Sandra has played a huge part in making Spanish GCSE such a success in its first year. Her passion for language learning is infectious, and she has worked hard to establish a course that inspires and supports students to achieve their best. She is an exceptional teacher who genuinely cares about her learners, and her contribution has made a lasting impact on both students and colleagues alike." - Trace Senior, Curriculum Manager for Oxfordshire Adult Learning

The results speak for themselves, as the first cohort of adult learners completed their GCSE Spanish in 2026, with all 11 students achieving a pass and more than a third achieving the highest possible grade, Grade 9!

For many of the learners, returning to education after decades away from formal examinations was a significant achievement in itself. Karen, who achieved a Grade 7, said:
“Sandra was amazing at bringing everything together and supporting a group with lots of different experience levels. I’d love to continue learning and hopefully progress to A Level Spanish.”

Supporting teachers to succeed

Sandra’s impact has also been felt in the College’s Teaching Skills Academy (TSA), which plays a key role in supporting staff at every stage of their career to deliver excellence in teaching, learning and assessment. TSA Coaches like Sandra are recognised as highly effective practitioners who work proactively to enhance teaching practice across the College. Sandra’s expertise has also played a part in the development of the new Teacher Induction Programme, which provides new teaching staff with guidance, professional development and support from experienced colleagues.

"Sandra has made a significant contribution to the development of our New Teacher Induction Programme. Her passion for education, willingness to support colleagues and commitment to excellence have helped create an induction that gives new teachers the confidence and foundations they need to succeed. She has been an invaluable part of its success." Jamie Green, Head of the TSA

As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day, Sandra’s story is a wonderful example of how passionate and dedicated teachers can inspire curiosity, unlock potential and help learners achieve goals they may once have thought were out of reach.

Whether they’re introducing students to a new language, building confidence or creating a love of learning, teachers make a lasting difference every day.

Thank you to Sandra and to all our teachers for the enthusiasm, expertise and care you bring to our College community.
