Students from our Adults with Learning Differences (ALD) provision are gaining valuable real-world experience while making a meaningful difference in their local community through a new partnership with Fern Meadows in Faringdon.
Our Adults with Learning Differences courses support students to develop practical life skills, communication, confidence, independent living and employability. As part of the Working in the Community module, students have put these skills into practice by working alongside residents at Fern Meadows, a residential care setting for older adults, where they planned and delivered a range of community activities.
Throughout the year, students have organised Tea, Cake & Chat sessions, creating welcoming opportunities for residents to socialise and reduce loneliness, while also hosting a Bring and Buy Sale and charity Cake Sale. These events not only encouraged community involvement but also enabled students to develop hospitality, teamwork, customer service, and event planning skills. Together, the students raised an impressive £130 through the Bring and Buy Sale!

Student, Jordon, played a key role in promoting the events by designing promotional posters. Working closely with his tutors, he responded to feedback, to refine his designs, and took increasing ownership of the project.
"My favourite part has been coming to Fern Meadows and meeting new people," said Jordon. "I really enjoyed creating posters too. Sarah showed me how to design them, and I worked on them at home before sending them back for feedback."

For Veronica, who volunteers in a charity shop, the project provided an opportunity to strengthen her communication skills by chatting with residents and helping create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
Hannah, who joined the ALD programme this year and hopes to work in a café in the future, has been able to practise serving refreshments, welcoming guests and developing customer service skills through the Tea, Cake & Chat sessions.

Sarah, Adults with Learning Differences Tutor, said:
"This partnership gives our students the chance to learn in a genuine community setting where they can build confidence and independence while making a real difference to other people's lives. Watching them grow in their communication, teamwork and leadership skills has been fantastic, and the relationships they've built with the residents have been incredibly rewarding for everyone involved. We couldn't have done it without the support of Nichola and the team at Fern Meadows."
Through this exciting new partnership, students are developing practical skills in a supportive, real-world environment while building meaningful connections with Fern Meadows residents.
