3D printers from Abingdon & Witney College used to provide crucial PPE for medics

6th May 2020

Abingdon & Witney College have become part of a collective of printers, couriers, manufacturers and medics who are contributing towards the effort to tackle Coronavirus, and provide support and equipment to key workers.

Known as Covid Print Oxford, they are providing PPE visors for frontline medics and raising money for their cause. The College is one of several organisations who are tasked with using 3D printers to help start the production of the visors.

Usually used by students to help with their engineering projects, such as CAD modelling, three of the College‘s five professional-standard 3D printers have been taken home by the College’s engineering staff to ensure production doesn’t stop and they can be repaired should any faults arise.

The headbands are then picked up by couriers, manufactured with the rest of the products to complete the visor, disinfected, and shipped to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

The collective’s fantastic efforts have been broadcasted on BBC1, BBC Radio Oxford and Jack FM, and the current donation total has nearly reached £5,000 (as of May 6).
