This programme has been specifically designed to develop your knowledge, understanding and practical skills in order to work as a make-up artist. Your skills will be developed to an advanced level through a variety of techniques in the following units: media, fashion and photographic, camouflage make-up, airbrushing techniques, face and body art, fit prosthetics, bald caps and postiche. In addition, there will be opportunities to study creative hairdressing skills and students will be expected to become involved in competition work.
This exciting one year course at the Abingdon campus is a practically based course and you will receive ongoing assessment on your practical skills. There will be theory which underpins the practical knowledge. In addition to your study programme, you will be required to keep a portfolio of photographic evidence, and complete industry related enrichment sessions.

You will undertake industry work experience in a variety of settings e.g. local theatres and salons.

Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps

Apply airbrush make-up

Camouflage make-up

Media make-up

Design and apply face and body art

Fashion and photographic make-up

Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques

Client care in the industry

Monitor and maintain health and safety

What next?
Students can progress into employment or decide to further their studies by progressing on to Higher Education.

Entry criteria
5 GCSEs at grade 4 including English or Maths OR a pass in the subject at level 2, with English and Maths not lower than a grade 3/Functional Skills L2 and at least grade 4 in one of English or Maths.

On completion of this course you will receive the VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Make-Up
Learning & method assessment
You will carry out a range of practical assessments. You will collate theoretical evidence in the form of photographic portfolio evidence, assignments, projects, tests, demonstrations and presentations. This will all form part of a main project that you will work towards at the end of the year e.g. a fashion show.
User skills
You will learn a wide variety of skills throughout the course. As well as practical skills you will obtain a range of transferable skills including written and oral communication, team working and self-directed learning.
