This is a course for those of you who have studied the language to Higher Intermediate Level and would like to continue practicing the language by learning new vocabulary and functional grammar necessary for communication.
You will increase your fluency and improve your accuracy through developing a wide range of vocabulary and consolidation of essential grammar structures such as verb aspects, participles, gerunds, negative and passive constructions. We will also be looking at word-formation, verb prefixes, compound nouns, abbreviations and noun diminutives. You will also develop your listening and reading comprehension and gain an insight into aspects of Russian culture.
What next?
This course leads to a Developing Conversational Fluency B course.
Entry criteria
There are no formal entry requirements, however, this is a course for those who have completed the Higher Intermediate course (or a similar course), or have studied the language at school at GCSE level, or have a sound knowledge of the basics of the language through extensive visits to Russia or self-study.
Fee information
A textbook will be needed at the cost of approximately £20.

As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.

There are bursaries available to help you with other course costs. Call 01235 216 212 for more information.

The rules on fee reduction are complicated and we would encourage you to talk to our Admissions staff on 01235 216 400 to discuss your options. You can find more information on our Fees and Bursaries page - search "Fees and Bursaries" at the top of the page.

Learning & method assessment
You will continue to practise all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) with the emphasis on the spoken language. Learning activities will include individual, pair, small group and whole class work. You will listen to the spoken word through conversation activities, CDs and DVDs, practise speaking, take part in discussions and role-plays, express your views, read more complex texts and analyse them, write short essays, watch Russian films and discuss them.

This is not an accredited course, so there will be no formal examination. However, your tutor will ask you to complete informal assessment exercises and will give you feedback.

If you are to gain maximum benefit and enjoyment from your language class, it will be useful to spend some time working between sessions. There will usually be a small amount of homework set each week (up to an hour’s work). When homework is not set, it is still a good idea to spend about that amount of time going over what has been done in class.
