This well-recognised qualification, accredited by the Royal Horticultural Society, is delivered at our purpose-built facilities at Common Leys Farm, near Witney. Whether you are looking to develop your horticultural career, enter the industry for the first time, or simply broaden your knowledge, this course could be for you.
This course will provide you with a strong foundation in horticultural science and its wider role in society. It explores plant structure, function and adaptations, alongside key principles of plant health, nutrition and growing media. You will develop the skills to specify and recommend plants based on site conditions and intended use, and gain an understanding of different planting styles. The course also examines the social, environmental and economic importance of horticulture, with a focus on biodiversity and the role plants play in creating and sustaining habitats.
Course units
This qualification certificate is divided into two units, each containing four topics made up of elements. The content is identified through the use of Unit / Topic / Element codes, as follows:

Unit 1:

Plant Science I: provides underpinning knowledge of the plant, its structure and function

Plant Health: provides underpinning knowledge and understanding of the effect of a range of factors on plant health.

Plant Nutrition: provides horticultural knowledge of plant nutrition and growing media.

Plant Specification: provides horticultural knowledge to make recommendations for planting based on matching plant need and site requirements.

Unit 2:

Plant Science II: provides an understanding of the range and role of plant adaptations.

Planting Styles: provides horticultural knowledge of the factors involved in creating a wide range of different horticultural plantings.

Horticulture and Society: allows learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of horticulture’s contribution to society, including social, environmental, and economic.

Biodiversity: provides an applied knowledge of the roles of plants in creating habitats to encourage biodiversity

What next?
Students can complete the Level 2 RHS Certificate in Practical Horticulture to make up the full Level 2 Certificate in Principles and Practices of Horticulture.
Entry criteria
No specific qualifications are required although candidates should have an appropriate level of general education to enable them to complete the exams.
Fee information
The fee you will pay is dependent upon your individual circumstances as this is a funded qualification. The full cost of the courses is £1,150 but you may be eligible for a reduced fee. Please discuss this further with our admission team at enrolment.
