his is a well-recognised practical qualification accredited by the Royal Horticultural Society that focuses on developing the essential skills needed in horticulture.

Equipment:As this is a very practical course you will need to provide yourself with the following items of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): steel toe capped safety boots and work or gardening gloves. You will also need a pair of secateurs and ear defenders.

The qualification supports career development for those already working in the profession, for those wanting to move into the horticulture industry or for amateurs wishing to increase their skills.

This certificate is divided into eight topics, each made up of elements covering a specific aspect of practical horticulture, as follows:1. Plant Identification: provides the skills and knowledge to enable learners to identify a wide range of plants.2. Plant Establishment: provides learners with the skills involved in the establishment of plants in containers and the open ground.3. Plant Propagation: provides learners with the skills and underpinning knowledge to propagate plants professionally.4. Plant Health: provides the skills to be able to identify and prevent a range of threats to plant health.5. Plant Care: equips learners with the skills and knowledge to be able to implement garden maintenance plans.6. Plant Pruning: equips learners with the horticultural skills and knowledge to be able to prune a range of plants.7. Garden Features: provides learners with the skills and underpinning knowledge to be able care for and maintain a wide range of garden features.8. Grassed Areas: provides learners with the skills required to establish and maintain grassed areas in private and public garden settings.

What next?
Students can progress onto the Level 3 RHS Certificate in Practical Horticulture or complete the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth and Development to make up the full Level 2 Certificate in Principles and Practices of Horticulture.
Entry criteria
No specific qualifications are required although candidates should have an appropriate level of general education to enable them to complete identification tests and short written knowledge tests.
