Develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to install, service, maintain and repair refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems across domestic, commercial and industrial environments.
The Refrigeration, Air Conditioning & Heat Pump Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship is designed for individuals who want to build a rewarding career in the growing building services engineering sector.

Apprentices will gain practical experience in the workplace while developing technical knowledge through college-based learning. The programme covers refrigeration systems, air conditioning technologies, heat pump installation and maintenance, electrical principles, fault finding, health and safety, environmental legislation, and customer service.

As the UK moves towards low-carbon heating solutions and increased energy efficiency, qualified refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump engineers are in high demand. This apprenticeship provides the skills needed to work on a wide range of systems that support comfortable, efficient and sustainable buildings.

Course units
Throughout the apprenticeship, learners will develop a strong understanding of refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump technologies, alongside the engineering principles that underpin their operation. Topics include installation techniques, planned maintenance, fault diagnosis, electrical systems, health and safety, environmental regulations, customer service and energy efficiency. Apprentices will gain practical skills and industry knowledge that can be applied directly in the workplace.
What next?
Following successful completion of the apprenticeship, learners may progress to:

-Advanced technical roles within the refrigeration and air conditioning industry.

-Specialist heat pump installation and commissioning positions.

-Building Services Engineering qualifications at a higher level.

-Higher Apprenticeships or Degree Apprenticeships where available.

-Manufacturer-specific training and professional development programmes.

-Supervisory, project management or technical specialist roles.

Entry criteria
-GCSE English Language and Mathematics at Grade 4 (C) or above, or equivalent qualifications.

-Employment within a relevant refrigeration, air conditioning, heat pump or building services engineering role.

-A genuine interest in engineering and sustainable technologies.

-Good communication, problem-solving and practical skills.

Qualifications received
On successful completion, apprentices will achieve the Level 3 Refrigeration, Air Conditioning & Heat Pump Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard. Achievement of the apprenticeship demonstrates occupational competence and includes successful completion of the End-Point Assessment.
