Abingdon CampusOver the term, you'll go from soft-plastic clay to finished pieces through a mix of demos, trying designs out for yourself, while also having plenty of time to explore your own projects:• Master the hand-building basics like pinch-pots, coiling and slab work, with chances to jump on the potter’s wheel.• Learn how to style and make your work unique; using colourful slips, stamps, carving textures and sgraffito, underglazes, oxides and wax resists.• Study the different stages of clay, the important terms and how to stay safe in the studio, so you truly understand the science behind the art.• Learn how to finish, fire and glaze your work for a look you will be proud of. Then your pieces are ready to take home and display, or can be entered for our end-of-year OAL ‘Arts and Homecrafts Exhibition’.
Please note there are no classes during half term.
Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2026 prior to starting the course.
All learners are allocated with a 4kg (total fired weight) allowance of clay per course, this is roughly equivalent to 8 very large mugs. Please note this personal allowance is not transferrable between learners or courses. Once this weight is exceeded, learners will have the opportunity to have more work fired at a cost of of £5 per 500g.
As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.
