Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems.
Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians can find themselves working inside or outside a property. Customer service skills and being tidy and respectful are important qualities as they can often find themselves working in customers’ homes as well as on building sites.

Duration:

• 36 months practical training period, plus 6 months for End Point Assessment

Delivery model:

• Work-based training with your employer

• Day release during term time (approximately 1 day a week for 3 years)

• Approximately 5 on-site assessment visits per year

• Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (7 days at college for each, if required)

• Off the job training will count for at least 6 hours a week of an apprentice’s time at work

Qualifications included:

• Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths

• City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Plumbing and Domestic Heating

• Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician Apprenticeship

End Point Assessment:

• Multiple choice test

• Practical planning test

• Practical, integrated assessment including CC1 and CENWAT

• Professional discussion, based on a log-book completed during the end point assessment period

What will apprentices learn?

• Health and safety legislation, codes of practice and safe working practices

• Selection, planning, installation, testing, commissioning and decommissioning, service, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair techniques on cold water, hot water, central heating, above ground drainage and rainwater systems

• Principles of selection, installation, testing, commissioning, and service and maintenance techniques on domestic downstream natural gas pipework systems and appliances

• Installation and testing techniques for electrical components and control systems on plumbing and domestic heating systems

• Scientific plumbing, domestic heating and mechanical principles

• Principles of domestic mechanical environmental technology systems

• Principles of fuel combustion, ventilation and fluing arrangements

• Principles of high-quality customer service

• Different communication methods to suit different situations

What skills will apprentices gain?

• Core plumbing system techniques including planning, installation, testing, commissioning and de-commissioning, service, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair techniques of cold water, hot water, central heating, above ground drainage and rainwater systems

• Electrical components and control systems techniques on plumbing and domestic heating systems

• The ability to take responsibility for their own work, organise and oversee a programme of work, and manage resources.

What next?
The apprentice can progress to complete other appliance qualifications and extend their qualifications in the commercial gas industry.
Entry criteria
Applicants are likely to have 4 GCSEs A*- C / 9 - 4, including Maths and ideally English, or equivalent, and will need to demonstrate the ability to achieve all elements of the apprenticeship during their programme, including working in a suitable job role.
Fee information
Free to apprentices. This apprenticeship has an £22,000 funding band. Small companies will need to make a contribution of £1,100; large companies could pay through the apprenticeship levy if they have funds available.
