Abingdon CampusThrough step-by-step guidance, learners will produce their own water lily artwork inspired by Monet, developing practical painting techniques while experiencing the meditative, expressive qualities of Impressionism.
By the end of the session, participants will have a completed water lily painting and a deeper understanding of how Impressionist artists capture light, colour, and natural beauty on canvas.
Students begin with an introduction to Claude Monet’s life and artistic approach, focusing on his observation of light, colour, and movement in nature. Learners will study his water lily series to understand brushwork, colour layering, and composition in impressionistic landscapes.
Sketching and Composing the Water Lily Scene• Planning the composition of the pond, lilies, and reflections• Simplifying natural forms while maintaining expressive qualities• Mapping out areas of light, shadow, and focal points
Colour, Materials, and Impressionistic Techniques• Introduction to acrylic paints, brush types, and canvas preparation• Colour mixing to create soft gradients, reflections, and luminous tones• Using complementary colours to create depth and vibrancy
Brushwork, Layering, and Atmosphere• Techniques for broken, dappled brushstrokes to suggest movement and texture• Layering paint to convey water reflections and shifting light• Building expressive detail in lilies, water, and surrounding foliage

This workshop is suitable for adults who are curious about art, returning to creative practice after a break, or looking for a relaxed introduction to expressive painting techniques.
Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2026 prior to starting the course.
