Oils are the most beautiful and forgiving of paints. They can be bold, subtle, fluid or delicate depending on the needs of the artist. We will look at the main ways of applying oils from painting a ground and building up from light to dark to blending and grading techniques. Tuition will be given on drawing/construction methods, colour mixing and palette craft. To begin with, simple still life painting will develop observational skills. Learners will be taught to examine the ratio of light and shade and colour variance on objects. Alongside this more formal aspect, learners will be encouraged to experiment with the medium to produce bold expressive landscapes.
Subjects to include:- Monochrome landscape- Basic measuring and construction drawing techniques- Still life with fruit: colour and form- Painting middle distance trees: shape and texture.- Creating space and depth in a landscape- Expressive mark making and alternative textures to create a bold seascape

You will receive lots of help and advice, through demonstrations from your tutor, plus one to one guidance and creative work within a supportive group setting. Please do not purchase equipment/materials until your course has been confirmed. What you need to bring to the first session: - A4 or A3 cotton canvas pad. Please not paper with a pad with a canvas texture pressed into it – real canvas is best. A good example is Pebeo Pop Art 100% Cotton Canvas. Paints - such as Winsor and Newtons Winton range or Daler Rowney’s Georgian. Colours: Essential: Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultra Marine Blue, Viridian Green (or Phthalo Green, but not both!), Also useful: Permanent Rose (very helpful for flower painters), Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre. A selection of Winsor and Newton or Daler Rowley or similar hogs hair brushes. At least a number twelve, a number ten, and a number six. Long flat or filbert brushes are very versatile, but you might also like to buy a small number two round brush for detail. A thinner such as low odour artists turpentine, Sansodor, or Zestit. A medium such as Windsor and Newton’s Liquin Original. Or, if preferred, traditional artist’s linseed oil. Palette: depending on preference, a traditional wooden palette, a “tear off” palette, or white grease proof baking paper.
