Develop the skills to install solar PV systems safely and professionally.
The Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Small Solar Photovoltaic Systems is designed for qualified electricians who want to develop the specialist knowledge and practical skills required to install, commission, and maintain solar PV systems. As demand for renewable energy continues to grow, solar photovoltaic technology is becoming an increasingly important part of the electrical industry. This qualification provides learners with a thorough understanding of system design principles, installation requirements, commissioning procedures, maintenance practices, and relevant legislation. It is ideal for electricians looking to expand their services, enhance their career prospects, and enter the rapidly growing renewable energy sector.
Course units
The course covers the principles of solar photovoltaic technology, system components, design considerations, installation requirements, commissioning procedures, maintenance practices, fault diagnosis, and health and safety requirements. Learners will gain an understanding of relevant legislation, industry guidance, environmental considerations, and the practical skills required to install and maintain small-scale solar PV systems safely and efficiently.

Entry criteria
This qualification is intended for qualified electricians. Learners must hold one of the following:

• Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment)

• Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance)

• Level 3 Electrotechnical qualification

• Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker

• Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification

• Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings Experienced Worker Qualification

• Equivalent electrotechnical qualifications from other awarding organisations

• Equivalent historical electrotechnical qualifications

Alternatively, learners may hold an ECS Gold Card issued by the JIB or SJIB as an Installation Electrician, Maintenance Electrician, or Domestic Electrician.

The qualification listed above must have been obtained within the last five years, or learners must provide evidence that they have remained current by holding the latest edition of the Wiring Regulations qualification.
