Develop the skills to install and maintain air source heat pump systems
The Level 3 Award in the Design, Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pump Systems (C&G 2924-34) is designed for experienced plumbing and heating professionals who want to develop the specialist skills required to work with one of the UK's fastest-growing renewable heating technologies. As the demand for low-carbon heating solutions continues to increase, air source heat pumps are becoming a key part of the transition to sustainable energy. This qualification provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to design, install, commission, service, and maintain air source heat pump systems safely, efficiently, and in accordance with industry standards.
Course units
The course covers heat pump principles, system design, heat loss calculations, sizing requirements, installation techniques, commissioning procedures, servicing and maintenance requirements, fault diagnosis, system optimisation, relevant regulations, health and safety requirements, and industry best practice. Learners will develop the skills required to design and install efficient air source heat pump systems that deliver effective and sustainable heating solutions.
What next?
Successful learners can progress into the growing renewable heating sector, offering air source heat pump installation and maintenance services to domestic and commercial customers. The qualification also complements other low-carbon technologies such as Solar PV, Battery Storage, Domestic Ventilation, and Retrofit, allowing professionals to provide integrated energy-efficient solutions.
Entry criteria
The training and assessment course is aimed at candidates who hold one of the following:

• N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification

• N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification

• N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification

• N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification

• N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification

AND, if not included within the above qualification:

• Water Regulations/Water Byelaws

Please note that stand-alone technical certificates and Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs) that are not competency-based are not accepted. A recommended prerequisite is the BPEC Low Temperature Hot Water Heating Systems (LTHWHS) qualification.
