Develop the skills to design and install battery energy storage systems
The Level 3 Award in the Design, Installation and Commissioning of Small Electrical Energy Storage Systems is designed for qualified electricians who wish to develop the specialist knowledge and practical skills required to work with battery energy storage technologies. As the demand for renewable energy solutions continues to increase, energy storage systems are becoming an essential part of modern electrical installations. This qualification provides learners with the knowledge needed to design, install, commission, and maintain small-scale electrical energy storage systems safely and effectively. It is ideal for electricians looking to expand their services, meet growing customer demand, and develop expertise in one of the fastest-growing sectors of the electrical industry.
Course units
This course covers the principles, design considerations, installation requirements, commissioning procedures, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and fault diagnosis of small electrical energy storage systems. Learners will explore battery technologies, system components, safety requirements, relevant legislation and standards, integration with renewable energy systems, and best practice for energy storage installations. The programme combines theoretical knowledge with practical application to ensure learners can confidently work with energy storage systems in real-world environments.
What next?
Successful learners can progress into specialist roles within the renewable energy and low-carbon technology sectors. The qualification complements other renewable technologies such as Solar PV and Electric Vehicle Charging and allows electricians to offer complete energy management solutions to domestic and commercial customers. It also provides an excellent foundation for further professional development in emerging energy technologies.
Entry criteria
This qualification is intended for qualified electricians. Learners must hold one of the following:

• Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment)

• Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance)

• Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification

• Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker

• Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification

• Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings Experienced Worker Qualification

• Equivalent electrotechnical qualifications from other awarding organisations

• Equivalent historical electrotechnical qualifications

Alternatively, learners may hold an ECS Gold Card issued by the JIB or SJIB as an Installation Electrician, Maintenance Electrician, or Domestic Electrician.

The qualification listed above must have been obtained within the last five years, or learners must provide evidence that they have remained current by holding the latest edition of the Wiring Regulations qualification.
