Develop the skills to inspect, test, and certify electrical installations
The Level 3 Award in Initial and Periodic Inspection and Testing (City & Guilds 2391-52) is designed for qualified electricians who wish to develop their expertise in inspecting, testing, and verifying electrical installations. The qualification provides the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out both initial verification of new electrical installations and periodic inspection of existing installations. With increasing focus on demonstrable competence within the electrical industry, many employers, clients, and certification schemes now expect electricians carrying out inspection and testing activities to hold a recognised qualification such as the C&G 2391-52. This qualification can help electricians enhance their professional credibility, expand their service offering, and access new career opportunities.

Course units
The course covers the principles and practices of inspecting and testing electrical installations in accordance with BS 7671. Learners will develop knowledge of initial verification procedures, periodic inspection requirements, safe isolation, electrical testing methods, test instruments, fault identification, interpretation of results, and the completion of electrical certification and reporting documentation. Practical training is supported by theoretical learning to ensure learners can confidently carry out inspection and testing activities in real-world environments.
What next?
After achieving this qualification, learners can progress into specialist inspection and testing roles or further enhance their professional development through qualifications in electrical design, EV charging installations, renewable energy technologies, or advanced compliance disciplines. As competence requirements within the electrical industry continue to evolve, holding a recognised inspection and testing qualification is becoming increasingly important for electricians involved in verification and certification activities. The qualification also supports career progression into supervisory, compliance, and technical management positions within the electrical industry.

Entry criteria
Learners should have a good understanding of electrical installation principles and hold a relevant electrical qualification. It is recommended that candidates have industry experience and a working knowledge of the current IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671). This course is best suited to practising electricians who are involved in, or intend to undertake, inspection and testing activities as part of their role.
