This qualification enables learners to gain crucial language skills for work or social purposes. It allows learners to expand cultural knowledge, participate in multilingual communities and improve communication skills when travelling abroad for business and/or pleasure.
On successful completion of this qualification, you will be able to understand and use basic words and phrases in familiar situations. You will be able to take part in simple interactions, applying the basic rules of pronunciation and employing appropriate and commonly used conventions as well as be able will begin to develop an awareness of the cultural conventions in the Japanese language.

Entry criteria
Learners may find it advisable to have some prior knowledge and understanding from our Entry 3 Award in the relevant language (Reading & Writing and/or Speaking & Listening) or an equivalent Entry Level 3 language qualification. However 4 years of learning at an appropriate language school may also be adequate so please contact our admissions team who will put you in touch with one of our experienced tutors if in doubt.

Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2026 prior to starting the course.

Fee information
A textbook is used to accompany the course, but it is optional to buy this (average cost £20 - £25). The textbook will support your learning for at least 1 year. You may also like to buy a small dictionary. Your tutor will be able to advise you at the first session.

As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.
