The Level 3 course in Horse Management provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue careers in competition yards, riding schools, the horse racing Industry and the breeding industry or within a wide range of ancillary industries. Students participate in practical sessions and formal lectures to develop principles and practices of horse management. The courses also prepare students to progress onto degree level study including the BSc(hons) Equine Science which the college runs in partnership with Oxford Brookes University.
An Advanced Technical Certificate is covered in 1 year, you will study 6 modules – equivalent to 1 A-level. On successful completion you can progress onto the Technical Extended Diploma (720) where you will study another 6 modules. Over the 2 years you will have gained the equivalent of 2 A Levels.

An Advanced Technical Extended Diploma (1080) is run over 2 years, you will study 18 modules and achieve the equivalent of 3 A–levels.

Students will be studying towards a study programme that will include their main vocational qualification, skills in English and Maths, Tutorials, Enrichment and Work Experience. These are essential skills for employment. Students will usually attend College 4 days a week from 9.30am - 4.30pm.

Course units
The course consists of mandatory and optional units. The units chosen are dependent upon the specific course undertaken but will be chosen from the selection below:

Understanding and promoting animal health, evaluating horse tack and equipment, how to plan and monitor animal feeding, prepare horses for presentation, stable and yard management, understanding the principles of animal biology, anatomy and physiology, understanding the principles of horse behaviour and welfare, working horses from the ground, understanding grassland management, apply the principles of horse fitness, horse rehabilitation and therapy, contribute to stud practices, contribute to event management, business management, and investigative project.

What next?
A student can achieve UCAS points, up to a maximum of 168 at Distinction level, which will enable them to progress onto Higher Education. The College runs a BSc Honours Degree in Equine Science and a BSc in Equine Science and Thoroughbred Management in partnership with Oxford Brookes University.
Entry criteria
5 GCSES at grade 4 including English or Maths and Science (Combined or Biology) not lower than a grade 3 OR a pass in the subject at level 2, with English & Maths not lower than a grade 3.
Fee information
In addition to the main course fees given below there is an additional cost of approximately £50 for uniform , £80 for course trips throughout the year and if you need to buy a riding hat, boots and jodphurs you shoud budget for in the region of £100. (Costs are given for guidance only and you may be able to apply for a college bursary for help with these costs.)

As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.

Assessment is by a synoptic assignment and external examinations.
User skills
Excellent English and Maths skills are essential for your success on your chosen course, for your progression onto further courses and into employment. From September 2014, whether you stay at school or go to college, you must continue developing your English and Maths skills.
