Are you a creative person? Considering a career in a salon environment and want to learn basic skills that you will be using in the Hair & beauty industry? Then this could be the perfect course for you.
This exciting course at the Abingdon and Witney campus will enable you to develop your creative practical skills and teach you the theory alongside the practical units. You will learn how to complete the basics for Hairdressing and Beauty. This will start with health and safety and communication skills progressing onto blow-drying and manicure. In the Hair & Beauty Studio you will have access to excellent industry-standard resources and products such as Wella and Kaeso. We offer so many different enrichment courses, for example spray tans, competitions and hair & beauty skills.

Please note Hair and Beauty Level 1 is taught at both Abingdon and Witney Campus.

Course units
These are the typical units you will study over the duration of the course:

Health and Safety: During this unit you will develop advanced skills in how to stay safe whilst in a salon.

The art of dressing hair: During this unit you will be learning a lot of hair science (it’s not all practical). We make it fun and interesting to help you remember the key terms and terminology.

Plaiting and Twisting: During this unit you will learn how to plait and twist the hair.

Nail Art: During this unit you will learn how to develop basic nail art techniques using nail art paints, gem stones and glitter.

Presenting a professional image in the salon: Through this unit you will develop an understanding of how to communicate professionally in a salon.

Introduction to hair and beauty: Through this unit you will develop an understanding of how the hair and beauty industry works.

Manicure: During this unit you will learn how to prepare for and provide basic manicure treatments e.g. filing and nail painting.

Working with others: Through this unit you will develop an awareness of how to work effectively as part of a team in a salon.

Creating a hair and beauty image: Through this unit you will develop the creative skill of using both hairdressing and beauty techniques to create an image.

Temporary colour: Through this unit you will develop the knowledge and artistic skill of using temporary hair colour to create an effect.

Reception: The aim of this unit is to develop an awareness of how to create a positive image of yourself and the salon whilst working on the reception desk.

Shampoo and condition: Through this unit you will develop the skill of shampooing and conditioning hair using a variety of products and massage techniques.

Face paint: During this unit you will learn how to design and apply themed face painting, e.g. animals, insects, cartoon and fant

What next?
This course is ideal for developing your skills in Hairdressing, Beauty, English and maths before progressing on to either a Level 2 Beauty course or a Level 2 Hairdressing course. This course will also provide you with the necessary skills to apply for an Apprenticeship.
Entry criteria
English & Maths GCSE at Grade 2, or Level 1 Functional Skills in both subjects.

As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.

Qualifications received
On completion of this course you will receive the VTCT Level 1 Diploma in an Introduction to Hair and Beauty Sector.
Learning & method assessment
Your practical and theory work will be collated to form a portfolio. Some units have an exam and all units have course work related to them. Most units have 3-7 assessments related to them, some of which will be completed on paying clients.. You will also study GSCE or Functional Skills English and maths to support your entry to employment or further studies.
User skills
You will learn a variety of basic hair & beauty skills including styling, plaiting and twisting, manicure, nail art and face painting. As well as practical skills you will obtain a range of transferable skills including written and oral communication, team working and self-directed learning.
