Gas engineering involves the safe installation, commission, decommission and the ongoing service and repair of gas appliances in either a domestic or non-domestic setting. Appliances can include central heating boilers, unvented hot water storage, cookers, space heaters, and meters.
Roles in gas engineering will include explaining how installations and appliances work, providing energy efficiency advice and ensuring customer service excellence at all times. Gas engineering operates strictly within the requirements of health and safety legislation. All gas engineers must be registered on the Gas Safe Register for each appliance in which they are competent to undertake work on.

Duration

• 15 months practical training period, plus 3 months for End Point Assessment

Delivery model

• Work-based training with your employer

• Day release during term time (1 day a week for 1 and half years)

• Approximately 5 on-site assessment visits per year

• Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (7 days at college for each, if required)

• Off the job training will count for at least 20% of an apprentice’s time at work

Course units
This apprenticeship is designed for those already have at least one years’ experience in plumbing. The course will enable you to become a member of the Gas Safe register in CCN1 (core gas safety), CENWAT (central heating/ hot water boilers), HTR1 (Fires/ space heaters), MET1 (gas meters), CKR (cookers).

What will apprentices learn?

• Current health, safety, regulatory and environmental legislation

• Safe gas/ electrical installation, commissioning, decommissioning, ongoing service/ repair procedures of installations/ appliances

• Gas/ electrical theories, procedures and electrical/ mechanical principles

• How to share product knowledge/ provide energy efficiency advice

• Taking responsibility for safety standards/ achieving objectives

• How to use/ maintain tools, equipment and PPE

• Safe gas/ electrical installation, commissioning, decommissioning, service/ repair of gas installations/ appliances

• Effective team working/ self-motivation

• Effective working with people from different backgrounds/ expertise

• How to identify, organise and use resources effectively/ sustainably

What next?
Successful completion of the course will allow the apprentice to become Gas Safe registered and work safely in the gas industry without supervision. In the future, the apprentice could choose to take additional training in other appliances and commercial gas.
Entry criteria
Applicants are likely to have 4 GCSEs A*- C / 9 – 4 including Maths and ideally English, or equivalent. Applicants should also have a minimum of 1 years’ experience in the plumbing industry and will need to demonstrate the ability to achieve all elements of the apprenticeship during their programme, including working in a suitable job role.
Fee information
Free to apprentices. This apprenticeship has an £22,000 funding band. Small companies will need to make a small contribution of £1,100; large companies could pay through the apprenticeship levy if they have funds available.
