This is the first in the follow-on courses from your Improvers A course where you will start to improve your conversation and your understanding of short dialogues and short texts and make yourself understood in a range of increasingly unpredictable everyday situations.

During this course you will work to be able to develop a deeper understanding of the subject in applying the language in relation to certain activities examples of which are listed below:

- narrate a week and various occupations present and past - describe accommodations, houses, flats and their surroundings - rent a means of transport or a gite, a flat - plan for an outing, leisure activities. - buy clothes, shoes and equipment

The main topics are designed for those who wish to converse a little more in the language when visiting the country or in a working environment.   If you are to gain maximum benefit and enjoyment from your language class, it will be useful to spend some time working between sessions. There will usually be a small amount of homework set each week (up to an hour’s work). When homework is not set, it is still a good idea to spend about that amount of time going over what has been done in class.

Please note there are no classes during half term.

Entry criteria

This is a course for those who have already studied the language at school for one or two years (about 50-60 hours) or followed a French Improvers A course, or else have spent some time in the country on holiday or business trips. You will already be able to cope with a range of simple everyday situations using the present tense and be able to recognise the past tense when you hear or read it, and you will start including it in your conversation. The standard approximates to level A2 in terms of the Common European Framework. We are committed to ensuring that you have a positive learning experience and will therefore be reviewing all our classes after the first session to ensure learners are enrolled on a course that is at the right level for them.

Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2026 prior to starting the course.

Fee information

A text book is used to accompany the course but it is optional to buy this (average cost £10). The text book Talk French 2, The Ideal Course for Improving Your French, published by the BBC, ISBN 978-1-40667-910-6 will support your learning for at least 1 year. You may also like to buy a small dictionary. Your tutor will be able to advise you at the first session.

As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.
