Engineering Technicians are mostly involved in highly skilled, complex work. Through the course of the apprenticeship, they will learn to apply safe systems of working, making a technical contribution to the design, installation, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of equipment, systems, or services. Technicians will apply proven techniques and procedures to solve engineering problems and demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in communicating both technical and non-technical information

Engineering Technicians will learn to take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work they undertake within the limits of their personal authority. They also need to be able to demonstrate a core set of behaviours to be competent in their job role, complement wider business strategy and development.

Duration:• 24 months practical training period, plus 3 months for End Point Assessment

Delivery model:• Work-based training with your employer• Day release during term time (approximately 36 days per year, over two years)• Approximately 12 on-site assessment visits per year• Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (7 days at college for each, if required)• Off the job training will count for at least 6 hours a week of an apprentice’s time at work

Course units
What will apprentices learn?
- Understanding the importance of complying with statutory, quality, organisational and health and safety regulations
- Understanding of general engineering/manufacturing mathematical and scientific principles, methods, techniques, graphical expressions, symbols formulae and calculations used by engineering technicians
- Understanding the structure, properties and characteristics of common materials used in the sector
- Understanding the typical problems that may arise within their normal work activities/environment
- Understanding approved diagnostic methods and techniques used to solve engineering problems
- Understanding the importance of only using current approved processes, procedures, documentation, and the potential implications for the organisation if this is not adhered to
- Understanding and interpreting relevant engineering/manufacturing data and documentation
- Understanding the different roles and functions in the organisation and how they interact.
- Understanding the importance of continually reviewing organisation processes and procedures
What next?
Successful completion of this apprenticeship and the knowledge, skills and behaviours developed, could lead to full-time employment or progression into higher-level or degree apprenticeship programmes in engineering.
Entry criteria
Applicants are likely to have 5 or more GCSEs A*- C / 9 - 4, including Maths and English, or equivalent, and will need to demonstrate the ability to achieve all elements of the apprenticeship during their programme, including working in a suitable job role.
Fee information
Free to apprentices. This apprenticeship has a £26,000 funding band. Small companies will need to contribute £1,300 toward the funding; large companies could pay through the apprenticeship levy if they have funds available.

What skills will apprentices gain?- Obtaining, checking, and using the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation)- Always working safely, complying with health, safety and environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements- Planning and where applicable obtaining all the resources required to undertake the work activity- Undertaking the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment- Carrying out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment- Dealing promptly and effectively with engineering / manufacturing problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel- Completing any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity- Restoring the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location
