Engineering Fitters produce complex high value, low volume components or assemblies in full or part, using machines, equipment, or systems, to the required specifications. Fitters will typically have a mechanical or electrical / electronic bias. Fitters will interpret drawings and plan their work, ensuring they have the right tools, equipment, and resources to complete the task at hand. Fitters will check their work against quality standards and adjust as required based on their knowledge.

As an Engineering Fitter you will learn to interact with line managers/supervisors; depending on the size of the employer and nature of the work you may be part of a team of fitters or eventually working independently. You will also learn to interact with personnel in other functions such as maintenance engineers, health & safety, and quality assurance personnel, as well as internal and external customers.

Duration:- 24 months practical training period, plus 4 months for End Point Assessment

Delivery model:- Work-based training with your employer- Day release during term time (approximately 36 days per year, over two years)- Approximately four on-site assessment visits per year- Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (7 days at college for each, if required)- Off the job training will count for at least 6 hours a week of an apprentice’s time at work

Qualifications included:- Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths- Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Technical Knowledge)- Level 3 Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship

End Point Assessment:- Project: report including evidence and questioning- Multiple choice test- Professional discussion

Course units
What will apprentices learn?
- Materials used in components/assemblies,
- Principles of design and operation and manufacturing and assembly processes
- Safe use of tools and equipment (including hand and power tools)
- Techniques for measuring, marking, cutting, and drilling materials to the required size and shape
- Engineering mathematical and scientific principles
- Engineering data; electrical readings, vibration, speed, and calibration.
- Component/assembly documentation and specifications
- Quality standards for components/assembly, Application of ISO9001in the workplace
- Health and safety, including Health & Safety at Work Act and environmental considerations
- Planning techniques – resources, tools, equipment, people; time management
- Component/assembly quality checks for example, checking tolerances, threads, voltages.
- Improvement techniques
- Commercial considerations including contractual arrangements
What next?
Successful completion of this apprenticeship and the knowledge, skills and behaviours developed, could lead to full-time employment or progression into higher-level or degree apprenticeship programmes in engineering.
Entry criteria
Applicants are likely to have 5 or more GCSEs A*- C / 9 - 4, including Maths and English, or equivalent, and will need to demonstrate the ability to achieve all elements of the apprenticeship during their programme, including working in a suitable job role.
Fee information
Free to apprentices. This apprenticeship has a £21,000 funding band. Small companies will need to contribute £1,050 toward the funding; large companies could pay through the apprenticeship levy if they have funds available.

What skills will apprentices gain?- Reading, interpreting, and understanding the component/assembly specification, diagrams, drawings, and work instructions- Planning component/assembly task and preparing work area for component/assembly- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity- Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects- Measuring and testing, checking/inspecting component/assembly - Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate- Applying improvement techniques; recommending/implementing solutions where appropriate- Communicating with colleagues and/or customers (internal or external)- Completing component/assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation- Reporting work outcomes and/or issues- Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and housekeeping.- Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling/re-using where appropriate- Operating within limits of responsibility- Operating in line with quality, health & safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measure where applicable
