Watercolour is a beautiful and yet illusive medium. This course will cover all the fundamentals and get you started on your painting journey.
Explore key watercolour techniques, from wet-into-wet and dry brushing to layered washes. You'll develop drawing skills, learn colour mixing and palette use, and begin with simple still life to build observation - focusing on light, shade, and colour. Alongside structured practice, you'll be encouraged to experiment with bold, expressive landscapes.

Topics include:- Monochrome landscapes- Drawing and measuring techniques- Still life with fruit: colour and form- Trees in middle distance: shape and texture- Creating depth in landscapes- Expressive marks and textures for seascapes- You’ll benefit from tutor demonstrations, one-to-one feedback, and a friendly group atmosphere.- Please wait until the course is confirmed before buying materials. For the first session, bring:- A4 watercolour pad (140lb/300gsm, Langton Rough recommended)- Watercolour tubes (e.g. Winsor & Newton Cotman or Daler Rowney Aquafine)- Essential colours: Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Viridian Green or Phthalo Green- Also useful: Permanent Rose, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre- Two brushes: large and small (e.g. No.10 round & No.2 round). Sable, nylon, or synthetic sable- Small white plate or palette- Jam jar for water- Kitchen paper - HB pencil and sharpener - Eraser

Learning & method assessment
As this is a non-accredited course, informal methods of assessment will be used.
Refer to learner’s initial assessment forms. Check learning by asking questions, observe practical work and give one to one tuition. Individual discussion and group discussion of outcomes of paintings produced and how they relate to the aims of the lesson. To track your progress and achievement you will be required to complete a short document.
