This art course will help you to draw with accuracy. Portraiture drawing will be introduced explaining the basic structure and dimensions of the human head.
On this course, students will learn the skills and techniques necessary to create convincing portrait drawings. Students will also discuss composition and will culminate in a complex landscape painting. Students will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of materials and techniques and find their strength. The exploration and development of ideas is also a key element of the course.

Main topics covered:

• The basic rules of using guidelines to help position things correctly.• The main rules of perspective.• The proportions of the human head.• The basic rules of sketching a portrait in basic shape and proportions.• Shading techniques to create three-dimensional imagery of a portrait on a two-dimensional plane.• Landscape painting in gouache or pen and wash technique with a perspective.

Please note there are no classes during half term.

Entry criteria
Students should have had some prior experience of working in art & design, GCSE/O level or evening class work. Enthusiasm and commitment are essential and more important than formal qualifications.

Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2026 prior to starting the course.

As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.
