Discover the exciting skills of drawing and painting and create your own unique art samples. The course provides a structured introduction to a range of art & design activities. Students are encouraged to experiment with a variety of materials and techniques, and find their strength. The exploration and development of ideas is also a key element of the course. Enthusiasm and commitment are essential and more important than formal qualifications.
Main topics covered:

• The basic rules of sketching a still life in basic shape and proportions.

• Techniques of modern artists related to still life.

• Basic rules of perspective.

• Colour theory.

• Creating a three-dimensional image of a still-life in gouache by using different tonal patterns and knowledge about the main rules of perspective.

• The basic rules of sketching a portrait in basic shape and proportions.

• Shading techniques to create three-dimensional imagery of a portrait on a two-dimensional plane.

Please note due to half term there will be no session on 18/02/2026.

What next?
There will be a continuation course Drawing and Painting - Mixed Ability - Summer in April 2026.
Entry criteria
No formal qualification necessary, but students should have had some prior experience of working in art & design e.g. GCSE/O level or evening class work.
Fee information
As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.

As this is a non-accredited course, informal methods of assessment will be usedLecture, demonstration, individual student practice, pair work, group discussion, quiz, exhibition of students’ completed projects, peer’s evaluation.

How will your work be assessed?Observation by tutor.Questions & answers.Your tutor gives you informal feedback. Exhibition of student works followed by evaluation of own and peer‘s work. To track your progress and achievement you will be required to complete a short document.
