Keen to develop your photo skills and make full use of your digital mirrorless or single lens reflex (DSLR) camera? Then start here! This course covers all the main controls of your DSLR and will enable you to move away from automatic settings and take full control of your picture taking, including two practical sessions to practice and consolidate classroom skills. The course will also consider composition and look at how you can get started in a number of different genres including landscape and wildlife photography.
The course covers the use of all the main controls of your camera and how to use shutter speeds and apertures, as well as ISO. An understanding of composition through use of camera controls and light is developed by reviews of your own pictures. Notes covering the content of each session are emailed out so you can build up a complete reference of everything covered. The course includes two practical sessions to practice and consolidate classroom skills. Both sessions are held on a week-end in central Oxford. The photo-walks will cover up to two miles at a very leisurely pace.
What next?
After completing this course you will understand how to operate your camera, so the follow on course addresses the real challenge of photography, “How to see and take better pictures”. This includes a deeper look at composition and opportunities to undertake basic picture processing using Photoshop.
Entry criteria
A DSLR camera (or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses) and lots of enthusiasm. No previous experience is needed - this course is for beginners or those with some basic understanding.
