Gain insight into the filmmaking process, from developing a script to bringing a story to life on screen. Explore key elements of production, cinematography, and editing in this beginner-friendly course.
Who is this course for?Any unpaid carer who is looking after someone with a long-term illness, special need or impairment is invited to join this online course.

This course is perfect for anyone interested in the creative and technical aspects of filmmaking. Whether you're a beginner or a film enthusiast, you'll gain practical insights into how movies are made, from initial concept to final edit.

Storytelling & Scriptwriting – Learn how to develop ideas and write a screenplay. Pre-Production & Planning – Explore budgeting, casting, and location scouting. Cinematography Basics – Understand camera angles, lighting, and composition. Directing & Working with Actors – Learn how to bring performances to life. Sound & Music in Film – Discover how audio enhances storytelling. Editing & Post-Production – Explore cutting techniques and visual effects. Short Film Case Studies – Analyse real examples of script-to-screen transitions. The Filmmaking Process in Action – Plan and develop your own short film idea.

Please note there is no class on 27/05/2026.

The course will be held online using Teams and your tutor will email you calendar invites prior to classes.

Entry criteria
This course is provided as part of the Courses for Carers programme that has been developed in partnership with Action for Carers. It is specifically for unpaid carers who are looking after someone who has a long-term illness, special need, or impairment.

Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2026 prior to starting the course.

Fee information
As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.
