Continue building your confidence in Mandarin with this Beginners-level follow-on course, focusing on practical conversation, listening skills and cultural insight.
This Chinese (Mandarin) - Beginners Continuation course is designed for learners who already have some basic knowledge of the language and feel comfortable at beginner level. It offers a supportive environment to practise and expand your speaking and listening skills while deepening your understanding of Chinese culture and traditions.

The focus will remain on practical spoken communication, including ordering food and drinks, shopping and bargaining, asking for and following directions, booking accommodation, and describing daily routines and hobbies. You will also develop your ability to understand and use Pinyin and the four tones with greater confidence.

Although writing is not the main focus at this level, you will be introduced to basic Chinese character writing, including common strokes, stroke order and radicals to help you start recognising and understanding 10–20 characters. Grammatical concepts will be introduced gradually to support your ability to construct simple sentences, but kept light to avoid overwhelm.

In addition to language skills, the course explores cultural traditions, common sayings, taboos and festivals, helping you engage more fully with the context in which Mandarin is spoken.

This course is ideal for anyone ready to take their next steps in Mandarin and continue their learning journey in a friendly and structured setting.

Entry criteria
There are no formal entry requirements for this course. It is strongly recommended however for those who are new to the language that you have completed the Chinese (mandarin) beginners introduction course. If you are a “Rusty” beginner it is recommended that you speak to one of our tutors who will be able to assess the appropriate level of course for you.
Fee information
A text book is used to accompany the course but it is optional to buy this (average cost £20 - £25). The text book will support your learning for at least 1 year. You may also like to buy a small dictionary. Your tutor will be able to advise you at the first session.

As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.

There are bursaries available to help you with other course costs. Call 01235 216 212 for more information.

The rules on fee reduction are complicated and we would encourage you to talk to our Admissions staff on 01235 216 400 to discuss your options. You can find more information on our Fees and Bursaries page - search "Fees and Bursaries" at the top of the page.

Learning & method assessment
We will use HSK1 as reference book for teaching methods and learning assessments. Learning activities will mainly be organised in pair work/small groups. Homework every week will be based on a summary sheet of the lesson for you to review in your own time.
As this is a non-accredited course, informal methods of assessment will be used. You will be required to complete a RARPA form which represents Recognising and Recording your Progress and Achievement.
