The Ascentis Level 1 Award in Volunteering to Support English Language Teaching and Learning is designed to equip volunteers with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively support ESOL learners in a variety of settings. The course covers understanding the role of a volunteer, safeguarding responsibilities, and promoting social engagement to help learners integrate into their community.

Participants will explore how to plan and deliver activities that support speaking, listening, reading, and writing, while developing awareness of common learner misconceptions and challenges. The course also introduces the basics of teaching grammar and language structures, providing practical strategies to assist learners with different experiences of literacy and English language acquisition.

The course is held at The Old School House on Wednesdays and Online on Fridays.

Aims of the Course:- Gain an introduction to teaching pedagogy and how to plan and deliver impactful lessons- Learn practical ways to support the teaching of speaking, reading, writing & listening- Understand safeguarding and boundaries- Promote social integration and engagement

Mandatory units:1. Assisting in the Classroom (2 credits)2. Safeguarding in the English Language Classroom (2 credits)3. Practising Language Use (2 credits)4. Providing Opportunities for Social Engagement (1 credit)

Entry criteria
You should have a Level 2 qualification in English or screen at Level 2+. Volunteers should be competent users of the English language. Must be 19+ years of age.
Fee information
As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.
