This 2 year course combines both theory and practical work. The course covers the scientific aspects of animal care as well as the advanced aspects designed to give you a broad spectrum of knowledge and the opportunity for progression into higher education. It also incorporates the management of small animal establishments, including the skills needed to work in a supervisory role. A period of industrial placement is an integral part of the course allowing you to work in a variety of animal management placements including zoos, pet shops, kennels or animal welfare organisations. You will also carry out duties on the college’s animal care unit. Methods of study will include demonstrations, lectures, tutorials, practical tasks and assignment work.
Students will be working towards a study programme that will include their main vocational qualification, skills in English and Maths, Tutorials, Enrichment and Work Experience. These are essential skills for employment. Students will usually attend college 4 days a week from 9.30am - 4.30pm.
Course units
The course modules will include such topics as; animal health, biology, anatomy and physiology. animal nutrition, feeding, handling and safe working, exotic animal health and husbandry, work-related experience, retail merchandising, pet store design and animal management, investigative project, animal welfare and breed development, behaviour and communication, dog grooming, animal collection management, wildlife population ecology, conservation, wildlife management and rehabilitation, the principles of animal breeding and genetics and business management.
What next?
The qualification is equivalent to three A Levels and will equip students for Higher Education at college or at university on animal-related degree courses. Application through UCAS will be necessary. The College runs a FdSc degree in Animal and Welfare and a BSC Top Up in Animal Welfare run in partnership with Oxford Brookes university.
Entry criteria
5 GCSES at Grade 4 including English or Maths
or
a pass in the subject at Level 2, with English, Maths and Science (Combined or Biology) at Grade 3/ Level 2 Functional Skills.
Fee information
In addition to the main course fees given below there are additional costs of £75 for protective clothing and trip fees of £85. Students may be eligible for a college bursary to help with these costs (Costs are given for guidance only.)

As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate.

Assessment is by external exams and a synoptic assignment - written, practical and oral.
User skills
Excellent English and Maths skills are essential for your success on your chosen course, for your progression onto further courses and into employment. From September 2014, whether you stay at school or go to college, you must continue developing your English and Maths skills. Abingdon and Witney College will offer you an exciting and relevant range of courses at all levels.

Students will develop knowledge and practical skills of Animal Management principles and practices.

Students will have the opportunity to work in a commercial setting on the farm, within the dog Grooming Parlour and in the Canine Hydrotherapy Centre.
