Vice Principal - Student Engagement
Jo’s early career was in the financial services sector, and she qualified to give mortgage and financial advice back in 1999, working in the sector in various roles from Customer Services to litigation , training and development to systems design. Following two experiences of redundancy, a change in direction was called for and Jo began working in the childcare and early years sector initially, but moved through the age groups until starting in the Further Education (FE) sector more than 10 years ago, achieving a BSc (Hons) Childhood and Youth Studies along the way and developing a real love for working with young people.
Within FE Jo has worked mainly within Student Services, Learner Support and Foundation Learning roles, taking the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead several times, and leading on the implementation of the SEND reforms in 2014 and the roll out of the Prevent Duty shortly afterwards. Jo is passionate and driven about working with young people and for the inclusion of all learners in the education environment, and has furthered her own education by completing a Post-Graduate Certificate in Autism and Inclusive Learning.
Jo’s focus is on ensuring all learners get the best possible experience at college, and a fair opportunity to fulfil their potential. Jo joined Abingdon & Witney College in January 2020.
