The Abingdon & Witney College Governing Body (or "Corporation") are responsible for guiding and monitoring the strategic direction of the College.
The Corporation works closely with the Principal and Senior Management Team, who are responsible for the day-to-day management of the College, and bears the ultimate legal responsibility for the College's activities.
As a governing body, the role of the Corporation is to:
- determine the College’s mission, vision and ethos
- approve the annual budget and 3 year financial plan
- ensure solvency, financial probity and safeguarding of assets
- approve retention and achievement targets, raising standards and monitoring academic achievement
- set a framework of pay and conditions for all staff
The Board of Governors believes that the purpose of the College is to open up opportunities that will enable students to secure a purposeful and rewarding future, and ensure that students leave us with skills that are valued by employers on a local, national and international scale.

Vacancy - Co-opted Member of the Audit Committee
Working with Abingdon and Witney College in a voluntary capacity as a co-opted member of the Audit Committee is an opportunity to contribute to the assurance of the College’s strategic outcomes. In return for your time, knowledge and expertise, you'll have the chance to work alongside members of our Corporation Board and senior managers, supporting us to achieve great outcomes for young people and to be a part of vibrant skills provision locally. Our vision is to be a college where everyone achieves more than they believe possible.
What you'll be doing
Our Audit Committee's remit includes:
- Advising the corporation on the adequacy and effectiveness of the Corporation’s assurance framework;
- Advising and supporting the Corporation in explaining, in its annual accounts, the measures taken to ensure it has fulfilled its statutory and regulatory responsibilities;
- Ensuring that specific requirements including the required format of the corporation’s statement of corporate governance and internal control are met
The Committee meets formally three times a year.
Who we're looking for:
Someone with a passion for audit and an understanding of our core purpose and strategy. Our ethos is based on being ambitious for our students, staff, community and partner organisations, and as an Audit Committee member you'll have a valuable part to play in supporting that ambition.
Someone with extensive audit experience either gained in large complex organisations, or as an audit consultant. You will have worked at a senior level in organisations, across different sectors. You'll have a good understanding of audit processes in complex organisations.
Someone that will encourage the things we're getting right and enhance existing strategies and support us to develop ways in which we might do it better by generating ideas, it's about making a tangible difference to the College.
Knowledge of the Further Education sector would be an advantage but is not essential.
Time commitment:
The appointment is for an initial term of four years. Prepare and attend at least 3 committee meetings each year plus induction and continuing professional development . Audit Committee meetings are usually held in the evening virtually.
